Imagine a Japanese factory in 1961 where men in white coats are assembling something that will outlast most of the cameras it's meant to hold. This is a tripod so over-engineered it makes the space race look casual.

The Vivo VM-7 "Standard-Mini," manufactured by Sanwa and exported in volume to American retailers like Sunset and Korvette, is one of those objects that reveals everything about its era by simply existing: chrome-plated brass outer tubes, hardened aluminum inner segments, eight telescoping sections locked by V-shaped compression collars and internal brass shims that extend with a silence so complete it's almost suspicious.

There's no geared crank on the centre column. There is just a knurled twist-lock collar, because in 1961 you either trusted your hands or you didn't trust anything.

The integrated pan-head offers 360 degrees of horizontal sweep and a 90-degree tilt for portrait work, and the high brass content dampens vibration the way a velvet curtain dampens an argument.

Then there's the rubber feet, which unscrew to reveal hidden spikes, a detail so quietly extraordinary that you have to wonder whether the engineers were solving a problem or simply showing off.
