In 1979, as disco faded and bell-bottoms clung to relevance, a Pentax engineer looked at the company's standard fifty and thought, "What if we made it cheaper?" Not worse, just more affordable: more plastic, less metal, same optical formula.

The result was the SMC Pentax-M 50mm f/2, a compact, lightweight, manual-focus lens produced between 1979 and 1985 as part of Pentax's second-generation K-mount lineup.

Serial 4953534 marks a later model, likely from 1982–1985, featuring the plastic barrel that replaced metal without sacrificing performance.

Despite its budget materials, the lens offers smooth, well-damped focusing, firm aperture clicks, and durable construction, with glass that renders slightly warm and soft, full of late-'70s character.

Sharp at f/5.6, dreamy at f/2, and with effortless bokeh, it's ideal on classic Pentax film cameras like the K1000 or MX, and easily adapts to modern mirrorless systems.

Unpretentious and dependable, it’s the photographic equivalent of a worn denim jacket: practical, charming, and still cool decades later.

Disco died, bell-bottoms faded, but this lens keeps shooting, proving that sometimes compromise done right isn’t compromise at all.
