The Canon 7 arrived in 1961 at the shimmering, self-assured height of Japanese rangefinder ambition. It was brilliant. The kind of brilliance that makes engineers stand straighter and accountants nervous. Canon’s designers had done something undeniably clever. They built a selenium exposure meter directly into the top plate. It was sleek, integrated, and modern. It was the future, tidily bolted down.

And in the manner of so many futures, it arrived having quietly misplaced the past. The standard accessory shoe was gone. Sacrificed on the altar of progress like a sensible pair of shoes at a fashion show. If you wished to mount a flash or an external viewfinder, you were left staring at a camera that had suddenly misplaced its manners.
