WHAT CONDITION THE CONDITION IS IN: 88-Day Confirmed Operation Warranty. Fully functional and well maintained, this new F1 shows only light wear. There’s a very small indent on the film card holder, not the body, and slight brassing on the bottom plate. There’s minor dust in the viewfinder. Shutter speeds and meter test well within tolerance. The winder works with batteries and is in great cosmetic shape. Scroll down to learn why this camera thinks it’s remarkable. Spoiler: it has a point.

Tokyo, 1981. The izakayas buzzed, the sake was too warm, and Canon showed up in black enamel and brass, far too pleased with itself. The Canon New F-1 didn’t arrive with a parade, just a confident swagger. It was a professional’s camera that knew exactly who it was. By then, Canon had spent a decade proving it could match Nikon’s brains and brawn. The New F-1 wasn’t just proof; it was a statement, closing the mechanical era with the quiet confidence of someone who’s always right.

It offered interchangeable finders and focusing screens, a system so flexible it still feels bold today. Eye-level for purists, AE Finder FN for those flirting with automation, waist-level for anyone dreaming of Rolleiflex days. You could even change metering patterns by a selector lever on the camera body. The 1980s promised convenience. Canon offered a relationship.

Perfect? Hardly. It weighs more than a moral dilemma and makes you work for every shot. But that’s the point. The New F-1 doesn’t care about being easy. It cares about being excellent. In an age when “new” meant “disposable,” Canon built something better: craftsmanship with a pulse and just enough attitude to outlast the years.
