The engineers in Tokyo, it seems, weren't in the habit of cutting corners.

It delivers a 1:1 magnification through a roof prism that renders an upright, un-reversed image with the kind of lateral accuracy that waist-level finders could only dream about. It also rotates a full 360 degrees on its 19mm threaded mount, because why commit to just one angle when the universe offers so many?

The brass-and-steel construction, so charmingly indifferent to the plastics revolution that would follow, means that surviving examples routinely emerge from camera bags and estate sales after fifty-odd years in fighting shape. Labeled by Japanese collectors with the affectionate designation 初期型, or "Early Type," their optical coatings are perhaps a touch warmer than later DR-series descendants.
