Mid-1990s. A Japanese designer stares at the original Mamiya 7 with the expression of someone who's just realized they forgot to add the wasabi. The camera was brilliant, sure, but brilliance has never stopped the Japanese from tinkering. So they poured another cup of sake, rolled up their sleeves, and thought, "What if we made it better?"

The result is the Mamiya 7ii, a refined evolution that preserves the legendary 6x7 image quality while introducing several thoughtful upgrades that enhance usability and reliability. In other words, they fixed things that weren't quite broken but weren't quite right either.

Compact yet robust, it features a die-cast aluminum body with a deeper, more ergonomic grip and a relocated exposure compensation dial for improved handling. The 7II adds a true multi-exposure mode, allowing creative double exposures, which is either a nod to artistic expression or an admission that film photographers occasionally like to mess things up on purpose.

The exposure compensation system was simplified to a one-button operation, an additional strap lug was added for more balanced carrying options, and the cable release socket was repositioned for easier access during tripod use. It's a laundry list of minor improvements that, taken together, make you wonder why they didn't just do it right the first time. But that's not the Japanese way.

The Japanese way is iteration, refinement, and the quiet satisfaction of version 2.0. Like its predecessor, it employs a quiet leaf shutter system within the lenses for minimal vibration and full flash sync at all speeds, along with a built-in centre weighted light meter supporting both aperture priority and manual modes.

Shooting ten 6x7 exposures on 120 film (or twenty on 220, if you can still find it), it delivers exceptional sharpness through the same acclaimed N-series lenses. The optics remain untouched. Sometimes the wisest edit is a silent one.

Though it shares the core strengths of the original, the 7 II's improved ergonomics, brighter polarized viewfinder, and enhanced functionality make it the most refined and user-friendly version of Mamiya's iconic medium format rangefinder system.

Mamiya took a beloved camera and made it better in ways we didn't know we needed until we held one. It's still a rangefinder that shoots rectangles the size of playing cards, still demands we focus manually and think before we shoot, but now it does it with a better grip and a brighter viewfinder.
